Space Saver: Turn an Old Desk Into a Handy Kitchen Island

We’ve all seen photos of huge, elaborate kitchen islands on cooking shows and in photo essays about celebrity homes. But what if you need more space in your kitchen and you don’t have the budget for a designer kitchen island? You can turn an old wood desk into a kitchen island in a few simple steps.

It’s easier than you think to repurpose a desk and turn it into a kitchen island. If you don’t have an unused desk, browse garage sales or thrift store for a desk.  Find one about 2 ½ feet high. The width is up to you, depending how much space you have in your kitchen.

Screw in the plate that attached to the casters, making sure it is securely fastened.

If you want to use the top of the island for cutting and preparing food, affix a butcher’s block to the desk. The quality of the block is up to you. Any hardwood, including cherry, maple or walnut, will make a sturdy butcher’s block. Use a waterproof wood glue, like Titebond II to affix the wood. Paint the desk the color of your choice or leave the origina...
