Space Saver: Turn an Old Desk Into a Handy Kitchen Island
We’ve all seen photos of huge, elaborate kitchen islands on cooking shows and in photo essays about celebrity homes. But what if you need more space in your kitchen and you don’t have the budget for a designer kitchen island? You can turn an old wood desk into a kitchen island in a few simple steps.
It’s easier than you think to repurpose a desk and turn it into a kitchen island. If you don’t have an unused desk, browse garage sales or thrift store for a desk. Find one about 2 ½ feet high. The width is up to you, depending how much space you have in your kitchen.
Take the desk into your garage or outdoor work area, decide how you want to use your new island. You may want to pull existing drawers out of one side of the desk to store large pots, blenders and other kitchen appliances or you may want to keep them to hold silverware, cloth napkins and small cooking utensils.
Once you’ve settled on a final look, set out to the hardware store for paints, drawer knobs or plastic drawers to use in place of original wood ones.
Remove unwanted drawers and cut down any wood beams that held them in place. Replace pull handles (from a girl’s French provincial bedroom set, for example) with knobs.
Make your kitchen island portable by adding rolling casters. You can buy caster kits, which include plates and screws, at any hardware store. Place pencil marks at drilling points, then place plate holding casters on the bottom of the leg and drill holes. Screw in the plate that attached to the casters, making sure it is securely fastened.
If you want to use the top of the island for cutting and preparing food, affix a butcher’s block to the desk. The quality of the block is up to you. Any hardwood, including cherry, maple or walnut, will make a sturdy butcher’s block. Use a waterproof wood glue, like Titebond II to affix the wood.
