Window Dressings

Every home has many windows, for the most part, and how you dress the window can affect the style and mood of the room, not to mention the functionality. With so many options in colors and textures for window dressings, deciding how to proceed can become overwhelming, especially with all the different types of blinds, shutters, curtains, and Venetians. Using natural and or green products is also a large factor in choosing window dressings, as that trend is still increasingly popular. Changing a window dressing can radically affect the overall mood and functionality of the room.

Choosing a design for a window that also compliments the rest of the room is often trickier than most people expect. A couple of things to remember while dressing a window include:

1. Set a budget before you begin shopping
2. Remember that the window is only part of a room, and keep in mind what the rest of the room entails (color schemes, furniture, wall décor, etc)
3. Decide whether function or décor has the higher priority (or what level the combination of both is)
4. Choose trimmings and/or fabrics that compliment your existing décor as well as your own personal style
5. Choose a window dressing that will give you the level of light reduction/privacy you desire for the room

Blinds

Blinds are by far one of the most popular window dressings, they are usually a cheaper option and tend to flow better with most room décor. However, when choosing blinds, there are so many options in that category alone. The biggest thing to consider is which type will serve the room’s needs the best, whether they should be vertical or horizontal, vinyl or wood, there are so many different options. Style and function also come into play here, wood may work well with the room’s décor, but they may not hold up as well in damp areas (or another example is that vinyl blinds do not hold up as well against the environment and may not be the best choice for families with young kids).

A popular trend for blinds is adding more dimensions. Designers are constantly trying to add more and more dimensions to a room. An extremely popular trend for interior decorating is using a combination of blinds and curtains for a more chic look. While every category has many sub-categories, the major overall factors to consider when choosing window dressings include purpose, style, indoors/outdoors, placement, cost, and use.
