Bedroom in a Box: Using Murphy Beds and Wall Beds to Save Space

Created by boarding house resident William L. Murphy in 1900 as a way to save space in his small room, a Murphy bed folds up or swings into a cabinet, closet or frame -- hopefully without someone still sleeping on it! But a wall bed is more than a comedy prop. And contrary to the term, it’s not always stuck inside a wall. In recent years, new designs and styles have cropped up, making wall beds easier to use and install. Let’s look at a few popular styles.

Cabinet Beds Cabinet wall beds are still referred to as wall beds, despite the fact that they are fitted inside an attractive cabinet or armoire. Some of theses are ready-made, but others come in kits the homeowner or company rep assembles. The cabinets are made of faux wood, real pine, real oak and feature other options, like fancy door handles. Some models have a
built- in shelves to store books or other items. DIY wall bed kits are available with vertical tilt or side tilt mechanisms or in “instant” bed in cabinet varieties. Most manufacturers offer kits in twin, double and queen sizes. Hardware includes aluminum, standard steel or supreme steel bed frames. You choose a kit according to the width, height, bed depth and side depth of your mattress.

Desk Beds Desk wall beds are offices by day and bedrooms by night. You can work on your computer all day and then pull the top cabinet down over the computer desktop to reveal a bed. The computer and other desk items are now hidden in a storage...
