Elevating the Studio Apartment

Studio apartments require some creativity to turn your large, cavernous space into a place where you can live, function and feel at home. The first thing you need to do is assess the size of your studio and what you really have room to do. Put your existing furniture in a place where it won't take up too much space; then evaluate if you can downsize any of it.

If you have a large open area between your living space and the kitchen, build a bar or an island. They will portion off the room and give you a place to eat so a table isn't necessary. If your studio has room for a table, then build an island instead of a bar. The area underneath becomes extra storage for you, covered by fabric curtains or actual cabinet doors.

A bar has a shelf that is thinner than an island, about two feet wide. A bar is also taller than an island, about 42 inches high. This is the best average ergonomic height since you will likely be sitting and eating or drinking. Choose bar stools that have seats about 12 to 18 inches below the bar top so people can sit comfortably. Kitchen islands are about 3 feet tall and at least 3 feet wide. It is supposed to serve as extra counter space and as a way to break up the room. The space under the island is perfect for storage since it's a large open space.
