Removing Stucco

Need to get rid of your old stucco wall? Want to replace it with something a little more contemporary or perhaps more watertight? Well there’s nothing like removing stucco to boost the confidence of your inner contractor.

Here’s what you’ll need to have and to do.

The first step is to get a tarp and put it beneath the stucco you want to remove. Then, take a 2-3 pound sledge hammer and gently tap on the stucco. You don’t need to get all King Kong on it. You can use a flat pry bar to dislodge the pieces that don’t break. Once the stucco is removed, you’ll need to remove the wire mesh it was attached to.
You can use a cats paw, a small crowbar that is made for specifically removing mesh.

There will also be some nails in there and you’ll need to remove them as well. By now, that tarp you’ve dropped has come in quite handy and you just ball it up and dispose of it.

Once you’ve tapped out the stucco and removed the mesh, you’re almost done.

You’re going to need a temporary vapor barrier after you’ve removed everything. This is really important since you don’t want the wood getting damp or moist.

Once it’s re-sealed, if it’s damp, it could lead to mold or dry rot. Building paper can be stapled to the wood or you can use a plastic covering like Tarvac and keep the wood dry....
