Attaching stone veneer has some pretty “duh” aspects about it – things that most any person should know. You pick out the stone, attach it to your wall with mortar and, voila, you have a stone veneer wall.

However, here are some tips that will make your stone veneer wall look better, last longer and will make it easier to install:

Thin may be in for Hollywood, but not for mortar – If you’re mixing the mortar for your stone veneer wall, be sure it is not too thin. Follow the directions on the mortar, but make sure that it is not watery. Mortar that’s too thin will not hold the stone in place as well, and the pieces can slip. You can also buy pre-mixed mortar that eliminates the worry about it being too thin, but it is more expensive.

Be conscious of your cut edges – Not that it can’t happen, but it’s not very likely that you will have a stone veneer wall without having to trim or cut some stones. ...
