The Unusual Guest House & Mother-In-Law Suite

Let’s say you’re expecting some guests, maybe some in-laws for awhile and you need a space outside your main house to house them, but you don’t have a ton of time or want to invest in a mega build. What are your options?

Well, you just happened to be blessed to live during a time where such structures can be purchased and erected both affordably and quickly. Let’s look at some unusual and yet surprisingly practical solutions to the guest house.

Old School There are a number of companies that specialize in log cabin kits . Many of their designs don’t require any sawing, drilling or heavy construction. Panel Concepts   [pictured right] sells a 144 sq foot structure with windows and a door plus a roof kit for just over $6,000. This is the type of structure that you can do yourself, with the help of an informed friend or two.

It won’t have any power unless you hook it up, but battery powered lights and even a propane cooking stove give it a rustic feel. Want a refrigerator without the AC? For about $665, you can get a solar powered refrigerator from Solar Town . It’s like camping in your own backyard!

Rainier Yurts sells a small sized yurt called “The Sparrow”  [pictured right] which is perfect for backyard set up. They have 12 and 14 foot versions with vinyl roofs and even windows. The Raven, the next size up ranges from 16 to 30 feet. As with all kits, there are upgrades like insulation based on the type of fabrics wrapped around the yurts. They make quaint and comfy spaces and add a touch of exotica to your guest house experience.

New School
Buckminster Fuller’s Geodesic Domes were supposed to be the new standard of living for America coming out of the 60’s and while they made great set pieces for sci-fi films, they didn’t set the tract housing world ablaze. Nevertheless, they have still remained popular in counter-cultural circles and the good news… the ver...
