Flagstone Hard-Scape

If you are looking to improve your landscaping consider using flagstone as a choice for your hard-scape ideas. Flagstone is a popular stone that is used often in building construction and landscaping. It is a sedimentary stone (consisting of fragments of broken preexisting rocks and minerals), and is also a type of sandstone. Flagstone usually contains feldspar and quartz, and is often cemented together naturally with calcium, silica or iron oxide. Because of the unique make-up of flagstone it comes in a variety of shades and hues, with each stone displaying variations of the same hues and also mixed hues. Typical color families of flagstone are red, blue, buff, brown, pink, peach, gold, and beige, as well as mixed colors.

Slabs of flagstone are split into thin layers (from 1/2" to 3" thick) and are usually cut or broken into irregular shapes, making them available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Flagstone is also very durable and doesn't crack easily. Another feature of flagstone is that it has a naturally non-slip surface, making it ideal for outdoor uses. The unique composition of the various shapes, sizes and colors of flagstone make it an ideal choice to use for outdoor enhancement rather than relying on ordinary pavers, bricks, or stepping stones that are shaped as specific squares, rectangles or circles.

Flagstone lends a more rustic and pastoral charm to landscape projects than brick or composite pavers  and can be used for a variety of projects. Flagstone is used for walkways, separated stepping stones, steps, outdoor fireplaces, patios, borders and edging for garden beds, circular edging around trees, pool decking, and bordering for ponds. Because flagstone is flat and fairly thin it can be stacked for short borders without any bonding. For pool decking and large patios flagstone should be set in cement, but for walkways or small patios you have the option of laying flagstone in cement as well as sand or stone dust. W...
