What's great about some of the companies that produce the electric inserts is that they also manufacture mantles and fireplaces as well.

This is the best way that you can add both heat and flame for a non-working fireplace as well as creating a mantle/fireplace out of nothing. But let's say you don't want an electric fireplace.
 
What can you do with a non-working fireplace? Here's five creative ideas to transform a fireplace into something utterly different.
