The Quest for Fire and the Renovated Fireplace

The fireplace is old and doesn't work. Instead of tearing down the chimney and starting over, what can you do to keep your fireplace both functional and esthetically pleasing. Yes, we're talking about the faux-fireplace.

Not only are fireplaces decorative, they serve a function; They keep people warm. So the first place we're starting is electric fireplace inserts. For roughly $500 you can get a fully functioning, electric heater that you can simply place inside of your old, pre-existing fireplace.
 
You can get the illusion and reality of both heat and flame. Yes, that's electric heat with a real flame that simulates a fireplace fire. Most even come with remote controls. What's great about some of the companies that produce the electric inserts is that they also manufacture mantles and fireplaces as well.

This is the best way that you can add both heat and flame for a non-working fireplace as well as creating a mantle/fireplace out of nothing. But let's say you don't want an electric fireplace.
 
What can you do with a non-working fireplace? Here's five creative ideas to transform a fireplace into something utterly different.
