Willing to Live Well: Where the Journey Begins and Ends (Your Driveway)

Maybe it was growing up near the La Brea tar pits as a kid, or maybe it was just the faint smell of petroleum, the fermented forces of nature at work, but I have had a fetish for asphalt and tar for as long as I can remember.
When I tell my fellow designers about my love for the level arts of driveways, they don’t really get it.  You see, the pathways of the world, the trails of industry and distribution are just elongated cousins of the driveway.  In fact, I often see the driveway as the final stretch of road leading from anywhere in the world to your home.  It’s where journeys end and begin. It’s a poetic relationship you see.  Or you don’t I guess.

But chances are, at least once in the life of your home or if you’re doing a re-sell, the driveway should not only be sound and functional, but also at the very least have no cracks or major chips.

It’s one of the first things a guest or a buyer will see.
So let’s look at how I get my driveway on.

If you are simply repairing a cracked driveway (and the sooner BTW, the better) you’ll need some standard clothes and tools:

Appropriate protective clothing Either a mason’s hammer or a small, hand sledge hammer) Goggles and gloves Broom Wire brush Mason's chisel or large flat screwdriver Pointing trowel Canned air or shop vac Water (either from a garden hose or a spray bottle filled with water)

Santasticpoolmastic.com sells a “concrete repair kit” called CCR3 that is a one-stop shop for repairing a concrete driveways cracks.  They are not the only ones.  Do a net search on " Driveway Repair kits " and you’ll get over eight million results.  They’ll have some tutorials included as well.

If you’re dealing with a tar/asphalt driveway, the same thing basically applies.  You’ll need the right clothing and equipment from the jump.

Sometimes though, if you’re on a tight budget or just don’t have a lot of time, you can get by pretty well on an asphalt driveway with a product called; “ Driveway Medic .”  It’s essentially rugged driveway tape that seals cracks.  You can get it in 6”x9, 6”x108 and 12”x108 sizes.  You can walk and drive on it immediately.

If you don’t trust your skills, you can always tap a company like Remodelze to find you the right driveway jockey to repair or replace your runway to the world.
