Ask an Expert: Deck Edition
Now that summer has arrived, many homeowners are finding ways to expand their living spaces to the outdoors. Naturally, building a deck quickly comes to mind, along with this question from one of our members...
"What are some things we should look out for when building a deck? "
We passed this question along to our Remodeleze contractors and here's what Erick Rickard of Rickard Construction had to say on the matter...
"The most common mistakes I encounter on most decks is the flashing. Flashing is the water barrier between the deck ledger (the board attached to the house that holds up your deck) and your home. When water comes down the side of your house it comes into contact with the deck and the ledger. If incorrectly installed this can cause water damage and moisture in your homes framing. The best way to avoid water damage is by placing small blocks between the deck ledger and your home. These blocks must be siliconed (caulking) and capped with either copper or lead. The ledger is then attached to the sealed and capped blocks. This method allows for air to flow through and dry out the area.
Another option I recommend is placing the cap over the ledger and over the siding below. Then use a house wrap like Tyvek or Tar Paper over the cap as well. Lastly you'll want to make sure that the last deck board has at at least a 1/8 inch gap from the home. A qualified contractor will use these or similar methods when building your deck and ...
