Someone is always ripping up wall-to-wall carpeting on those “extreme home renovation” shows on TV. But that doesn’t mean the soft surface that used to greet your bare feet in the Summer is dead and gone.

It’s just getting a little facelift.

Just like parachute pants, pet rocks and big hair, wall-to-wall carpeting had its time in the sun. In the 1970s and ‘80s, wall-to-wall carpeting was everywhere – in shag forms and colorful hues and fibers that eventually lost their luster.

While wall-to-wall carpeting never completely went the way the mood ring, it did see its popularity decline. Why?

  • Wall-to-wall carpeting became replaced by affordable manufactured wood flooring like laminate. Homeowners were able to have the look of real wood in their homes without having to break the bank to do it.
  • Other flooring options like bamboo, laminate, stone, vinyl and linoleum are easier to clean and maintain than carpeting.
  • Homes with wood or stone floors often have a higher resale value than those with carpeting.
  • Environmental and health issues – Carpeting often negatively affected indoor air quality, produced potentially harmful emissions and was more difficult to dispose of at waste disposal facilities.
Step into almost any new home in the 1990s and there was the same thing in the main living areas – boring beige wall-to-wall carpeting. It was cheap and went with any décor. Now, wall-to-wall carpeting is taking a little different shape.

Wall-to-wall carpeting in the 21st century is like the Oldsmobile commercials of the past: “This isn’t your father’s Oldsmobile.” Bright colors, geometric shapes and exciting patterns are today’s carpeting choices.
