When considering brick as an option for a wall, driveways, bbq, or outdoor bar, it behooves one to understand the nature and qualities of the different varieties of brick. Let’s take a look at them.

Clay Bricks
Clay bricks are the most common brick and they are like an artificial stones obtained by molding clay in rectangular blocks of uniform size (19 cm x 9 cm x 9 cm) and then by drying and burning these blocks. Some clay bricks are unfired and compressed. When watered, they expand and are great for repairs to distressed surfaces.

Common Burnt Clay Bricks
These bricks are hand or machine molded, with an allowance being made for shrinkage in drying and burning. They can be used for common building purposes and should be free from cracks, flaws and nodules of free lime.

Fire Bricks
Nowadays they are called heavy and dense Firebricks but old masters still call them fireclay bricks just because they are made of simple fireclay (which actually is the most ordinary mud.) Fireclay can be easily located out in nature but it must contain the right refractory properties, suitable content ratio of silica and alumina.

Some shops call these bricks fireplace bricks. They are used for building cooking chambers in wood fired ovens, for creating fireplaces, all sorts of fire boxes and wood heater and furnace linings, you name it. Fireclay bricks are very heavy and dense, having low porosity and even on re-heatings they can last for a very, very long time.

Perforated Bricks
These bricks literally have holes in them. They are also known as “Breezeway Bricks.” They have been used for years on streets so that water can drain from the tops to the earth down below. You can also use them as walls and let the natural breeze circulate through them--great for walls in hot climates.
