Creative Uses for Bamboo Fencing

Bamboo is a versatile material that's ideal for the outdoors and comes in many different sizes and thicknesses as well. Take a look at your backyard and assess where you need fences, or where they will accent what you already have. These bamboo fences also add an exotic, tropical appeal to your yard which will accent almost any other kind of décor.

Bamboo Dog Run
Bamboo is a perfect material for a dog run. Use thick bamboo poles, no less than 1/2” diameter, and as high as you think necessary for your breed of dog. Attach the poles both horizontally and vertically, using a thin, but strong rope or string. There should be a square space 3”-6” between each new pole. Again, the strength of everything will greatly depend on how large of a dog you have. If your dog run is built on cement, drill holes in it so the bamboo poles fit snugly and won't waver. You may need to add additional cement to ensure the sturdiness.

Bamboo Privacy Walls
You can use a simple bamboo fence to fully obscure a storage area. These fences have bamboo poles stacked right next to each other so no one can see what is on the other side. You can get them in a dark color or a lighter shade to match your backyard décor. The good thing about these fences is they come premade so all you have to do is install them. First, compact all the things you need stored into as small an area as possible. This lets you keep as much open space in your backyard as possible. Then you install the fence according to the instructions. It may be a fence you have to lightly assemble or one that simply unrolls (this is the easiest, most common bamboo fence). In this case, all you have to do is secure the fence using some nails.

You can  also buy prebuilt bamboo fence panels as shown in the picture to the right. Those fence panels can be found here .

The Magical Malleable Fence: Bamboo Fencing

Bamboo is everywhere these days, both in and out of the home and for good reason. It’s incredibly flexible in terms of its nature as a grass/wood/fiber and that flexibility has been really maximized in flooring and indoor paneling. It might be the most magical and malleable innovation in home building, décor and remodeling in the last twenty years.

People consider bamboo flooring a reasonable alternative to traditional floors without much debate. But what about things like fencing? Can bamboo provide a serious alternative to materials like cedar?

Let’s look at from the macro perspective on bamboo vs. cedar when it comes to the environment.

A Cedar tree takes upwards of forty years to grow to a size where it can be harvested, and when it's harvested, that's it. When it is harvested, it throws entire ecosystems off balance, reduces the earth's oxygen production, and gives rise to soil erosion and runoff. It’ s not cost effective, to the planet. There is no deforestation with bamboo. Unlike traditional lumber, the demand for bamboo is less than its growth rate, so using bamboo as a primary building material helps keep our forests where and as they are. Philosophically, there can be no debate about bamboo as being an eco-friendly material. In terms of tensile strength, bamboo is as strong as steel. Did you know that it has silica in its fibers? Silica makes bamboo rot and termite resistant.

Almost all bamboo fencing is poles, either sold separately or rolled. Rolled pole fencing usually comes in 8 foot long sections and ranges from 3 to 8 feet high in length. You can get different colors and stains with bamboo, but for the most part, it’s a fairly traditional look and feel. However, China, where bamboo is exceedingly abundant, is working with strand woven, bamboo fiber fences that resemble planked or boarded fences.

Available mostly to contractors, they’ re not quite ready for retail distribution and sale just yet. We...
