Willing to Live Well: Attic Madness

I’ve been told that I have bats in the belfry, but no one has ever accused me of not having a light on in my attic if you know what I mean.

The attic is one of the more interesting and at times, problematic spaces in a house.  The biggest challenge is insulation.  Heat rises and if your attic is not insulated, then you’re burning cash while trying to stay warm.

Some people literally blow off any functional use for their attic by using a controversial spray-foam-insulation.  Other folks lay down insulation.  In any case, before you can turn your attic into a play space or work space, you’ve got to tighten it up.  They key is to make sure that the insulation doesn’t lead to a class action suit.  Do your research here boys and girls, or get yourself a professiona l to prepare the room for you.  The fun part is still all yours to do!

So let’s imagine for a moment that your attic is ready to romp in.  You’ve decided it’s not going to be a storage space, but a functional and integrated part of your house.

Since heat does rise, you have to make sure that you have some climate control up there .  I’m a big proponent of windows and skylights that actually open and double as vents.  You’ll also want to have some electrical wiring , so you can bring a fan or a small AC unit if you need one. In some parts of the country, where attics are a lifestyle, you will need these comforts.

I love the attic as an alternative sleeping space , especially if you’re dealing with pitched roofs and the height descends on both sides. What a romantic sleeping proposition, don’t you think? Even tall people can find space in a horizontal position.

Getting bedding up into an attic can be tricky.  I actually advocate the use of space-age, form fitting foam cushions, cloned cousins of the Tempurpedic.  Futons work well, though they can be cumbersome when squeezing through small openings.  Lastly, air mattresses have really come a long way baby, and can offer a sound sleeping experience.

One of my favorite attic remixes was done for a friend just outside of Cleveland.  He was, let’s say, a hardcore meditator.  Yeah, I know hardcore and meditation seem a little oxymoronic, but this guy was unusual to say the least.  He smoked Gitanes and threw back shots of wheat grass.  And get this.  He was a meat cutter!  Said it kept him honest or something like that.  Anyway, he was deep into meditating, Mahayana Buddhist style.

So he had this attic and we turned it into a retreat of sorts.  We used water-based paint, brought in a few plants that didn’t need a lot of light and since the attic was basically a rectangle, we got some padding for the floor.  And here’s where it gets cool…we got remnant pieces of carpet and literally fitted them to...
