How to Build an Arbor

Creating an arbor for the outdoor area of your home can add so much to visualize impact, but also creates a relaxing haven right in your yard. Below are some general steps for how to create an arbor.

Step 1:
The first step to creating an arbor is to seal the concrete—which provides a resistant barrier, prevents water damage, and keeps stains away. Clean the area first by washing (using a pressure washer is always a good trick). It takes about 6 hours to dry, but 24 hours would be best since you are putting an arbor on the concrete.

Step 2:
While you are waiting for the sealer to dry, you can construct the posts. For a general sized arbor you would need about 18 (with 2”x6”x8” spacer blocks). These make up two for each of the six posts, in addition to a few others for temporary support. You then want to sandwich the spacer blocks between two 2”x6”s and at either ends. Lock these down with screws (galvanized).

Step 3:
The next step is to dig holes. You can lay the position of the arbor with stakes and twine (so you could check the squareness). You can use a manual post-hole digger or a gas-powered auger (saves you more time). Each post should be four to six feet apart. Measuring from the first hole and share the rest of the distance between the other posts.

Step 4:
After this, fill each hole with approximately six inches of gravel and tamp it. Then place the post in the hole. Pour fast-setting concrete to fill the hole (then tamp the concrete to get rid of any air bubbles). Then pour more concrete in the hole until it fills it two inches about the ground.

Step 5:
The next step is measuring and cutting the posts. First, measure and cut for the ceiling height (this will be where the tie-beam rests, so putting in the temporary space block will be helpful). Once the beam is in place and secure, you can remove the block. Next, measure and cut (for the height that the post wil...
